The Main Attraction
The Gokarna Backwaters
The backwater network stretches from the Tadadi fishing harbour in the north to the Kumbhashi village creeks in the south — over 15 km of navigable, largely undiscovered waterways.
Bird Island
An uninhabited mangrove islet where thousands of egrets, cormorants, and kingfishers roost. One of the most spectacular wildlife sights on the Karnataka coast.
Mangrove Tunnels
In the upper reaches of the Tadadi creek, the mangroves close overhead to form a cathedral of roots. Best explored at high tide in a narrow coracle.
Fishing Villages
The villages of Kumbhashi and Tadadi preserve centuries-old boat-building traditions. Meet the fishermen, see the boats built from teak and jackwood.
Sandbars at Dusk
At low tide, temporary sandbars emerge mid-channel — boat pilots know them all. Ask your boatman to anchor for a sunset picnic on one.
Coracle Rides
Circular wicker-and-tar coracles are used in the narrow shallow channels. A wobbly, unforgettable way to navigate the innermost creeks.
Sea Meeting

Best Time to Visit
October to March. Avoid June–September (monsoon closes beaches and boats). The water is clearest Nov–Feb.
Getting There
Nearest railhead: Ankola (20 km) or Kumta (25 km). Overnight trains from Bangalore, Goa, or Mangalore. Cabs from both stations.
Where to Stay
Shacks & budget huts: Kudle and Om Beach. Mid-range: Om Beach Resort. Boutique: Nirvana Café Cottages. Budget: Gokarna town guesthouses.
Boat Hire
Arrange boats at the Gokarna Main Beach jetty. Negotiate directly with fishermen. Full-day backwater tours run ₹1,200–₹2,500 for a shared group.
Dress Code
Gokarna is both a temple town and a beach town. Cover up near the temples and bazaar. Beach attire is fine at the beaches themselves.
Connectivity
Patchy to no signal at the southern beaches. BSNL works best in the area. Download offline maps and carry cash — ATMs only in Gokarna town.
